Pengertian ‘pornografi’ secara umum telah dipahami oleh setiap individu. Dengan pola pikir individu yang berbeda, kata ‘pornografi’, terlepas dari konotasi positif dan negatifnya, memiliki sejumlah arti yang hampir sama dalam keragaman komunitas masyarakat kita. Atau dalam arti lain adalah tulisan tentang wanita susila. Berikut ini beberapa definisi mengenai pornografi:
· Menurut definisi RUU Pornografi, "Pornografi adalah materi seksualitas yang dibuat oleh manusia dalam bentuk gambar, sketsa, ilustrasi, foto, tulisan, suara, bunyi, gambar bergerak, animasi, kartun, syair, percakapan, gerak tubuh, atau bentuk pesan komunikasi lain melalui berbagai bentuk media komunikasi dan/atau pertunjukan di muka umum, yang dapat membangkitkan hasrat seksual dan/atau melanggar nilai-nilai kesusilaan dalam masyarakat.
· Menurut Kamus Besar Bahasa Indonesia : Pornografi adalah penggambaran tingkah laku secara erotis dengan lukisan atau tulisan untuk membangkitkan nafsu berahi; bahan bacaan yang dengan sengaja dan semata-mata dirancang untuk membangkitkan nafsu berahi.
· Oxford English Dictionary : Pornografi adalah pernyataan atau saran mengenai hal-hal yang mesum atau kurang sopan di dalam sastra atau seni.
RUU Pasal 1 ayat 1, menyebutkan, “Pornografi adalah substansi dalam media atau alat komunikasi yang dibuat untuk menyampaikan gagasan-gagasan yang mengeksploitasi seksual, kecabulan, dan/atau erotika.”

Dapat ditambahkan bahwa secara umum pornografi akan merusak masa depan generasi muda sehingga mereka tidak lagi menghargai hakikat seksual, perkawinan dan rumah tangga.
- Dari segi etika atau moral, pornografi akan merusak tatanan norma-norma dalam masyarakat, merusak keserasian hidup dan keluarga dan masyarakat pada umumnya dan merusak nilai-nilai luhur dalam kehidupan manusia seperti nilai kasih, kesetiaan, cinta, keadilan, dan kejujuran. Nilai-nilai tersebut sangat dibutuhkan masyarakat sehingga tercipta dan terjamin hubungan yang sehat dalam masyarakat. Masyarakat yang sakit dalam nilai-nilai dan norma-norma, akan mengalami kemerosotan kultural dan akhirnya akan runtuh dan khaos.
